Class Q Barn Conversion in Derbyshire

This project involved the conversion of an existing agricultural building in Derbyshire into a contemporary countryside home through the Class Q permitted development process.

The design was developed around the building’s existing form, structure and agricultural character, with the aim of creating a high-quality home while preserving the simplicity and identity of the original barn.

The internal layout was carefully arranged to provide generous, light-filled living spaces with clear views across the surrounding landscape. New openings were introduced to improve natural light and strengthen the connection between the interior and countryside, while remaining appropriate to the proportions and character of the existing structure.

A restrained material palette and simple architectural detailing help retain the rural character of the building. Contemporary glazing and carefully considered interventions provide the comfort, practicality and visual quality required for modern family life.

The resulting design reimagines the agricultural building as a distinctive countryside home, demonstrating how a planning-led and site-specific approach can successfully balance modern living with the character of an existing rural structure.
