Class Q Barn Conversion in Windley, Derbyshire

This project involved the conversion of a redundant agricultural building in Windley, Derbyshire, into a contemporary countryside home through the Class Q permitted development process.

The design was developed around the existing form, structure and agricultural character of the building, with the aim of creating a high-quality home while retaining the simplicity and identity of the original barn.

The internal layout was carefully planned to create generous, light-filled living spaces with strong views across the surrounding countryside. New openings were positioned to improve natural light and strengthen the connection between the interior and landscape, while remaining appropriate to the proportions and character of the existing structure.

A restrained palette of materials and simple architectural detailing helps preserve the rural character of the barn. Contemporary glazing and carefully considered interventions provide the comfort, practicality and visual quality required for modern family life.

The resulting design demonstrates how a redundant agricultural building can be transformed through a planning-led and site-specific approach, creating a distinctive home that remains closely connected to its Windley setting.
