Contemporary Country House in Derbyshire

This project involved the design of a substantial contemporary country house in Derbyshire, developed to provide generous family accommodation while maintaining a strong relationship with its rural setting.

The proposals were shaped by the site’s landscape, orientation and long-distance views. The architectural form was carefully composed to create a confident contemporary home without overwhelming its surroundings, using a balanced arrangement of solid forms, recessed elements and expansive glazing.

Internally, the layout was organised around large, light-filled living spaces with clear connections between the kitchen, dining, family and entertaining areas. Principal rooms were positioned to take advantage of views across the landscape, while more private accommodation was arranged to provide separation, comfort and a sense of retreat.

Architectural glazing plays a central role in the design, bringing natural light deep into the plan and creating a direct visual connection between the interior, terraces and surrounding grounds. The material palette and detailing were kept refined and cohesive, reinforcing the overall clarity of the composition.

The resulting design combines contemporary rural architecture, generous family living and a strong sense of place, creating a distinctive home that responds directly to its Derbyshire landscape.
